Connecting Sensors to ESP32: A Planning Guide
A reliable ESP32 sensor project starts by matching interfaces, voltage levels, sampling needs and environmental limits before writing firmware.
Identify the sensor interface
Sensors may expose digital GPIO, analog voltage, I2C, SPI, UART or specialized one-wire style interfaces. Identify the actual interface from the component documentation before choosing pins or libraries.
Also record supply voltage, logic levels and expected current. A connector that physically fits does not prove electrical compatibility.
Separate measurement from interpretation
Firmware first acquires a raw or converted measurement; the application then decides what that value means. Keeping those steps separate makes calibration, filtering and fault detection easier to reason about.
For soil moisture, a useful percentage requires calibration against the actual sensor and growing medium. A generic threshold should not be presented as a verified irrigation setpoint.
Plan failure behavior
Decide how the system detects disconnected, implausible or stale sensor data. Automated control should fail to a defined safe state rather than blindly acting on a missing measurement.
Log enough diagnostic context to distinguish a sensor fault from a network or actuator problem. This becomes especially important in unattended IoT installations.
